DERMA ROLLER COMPARED TO OTHER COSMETIC TREATMENTS

It is often important to be able to compare different cosmetic treatments to discover which is most suitable for you. In the section below we discuss the difference between different treatments and compare the scientific research supporting their claims.

Derma Roller compared to IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

IPL has been shown to increase collagen type 1 and type 3. In a recent scientific study it was shown that after 3 weeks of treatment the derma roller can increase total collagen content significantly more than IPL. Derma roller treatments also resulted in more thickening of the skin than IPL so producing better anti-aging results*.

Derma Roller compared to Laser Skin Resurfacing (LSR)

Both derma rollers and laser resurfacing work by causing micro trauma in the dermis so increasing collagen production. Unfortunately LSR can actually boil the water in the skin surface as it passes through to deeper layers. This can cause scar tissue in these layers which may need to be treated at a later date. In comparison the holes produced by skin needling generally close up in about 8 hours without any signs of increased scarring.

Derma Roller compared to Chemical peels

Chemical peels work by removing several of the outer layers of the skin. This then stimulates collagen induction in the deeper layers of the skin and increases absorption of beauty products as the skins natural barrier is removed. In comparison derma rollers can increase collagen production and transdermal absorption but without removing the outer layers of the skin. This reduces the risks of infection and results in dramatically reduced recovery times compared to chemical peels.

Derma Roller compared to Microdermabrasion

Like microdermabrasion, skin needling can stimulate collagen production in the dermis to produce anti aging results and also to benefit scars. Both work through a complex biological process which naturally results in the body producing more of its own natural collagen. However unlike microdermabrasion skin needling does not remove the outer protective layer of skin. Instead it causes micro channels through the outer epidermis (outer layer of skin). By using micro channels the outer layer of skin is left in place dramatically reducing the risk of infection and fluid loss from the skin. As the outer layer of skin is not removed there is also not the same risk of colour changes or loss of pigmentation in the skin which can occur with microdermabrasion. Proponents of microdermabrasion also often point to its ability to increase the penetration of anti aging products into the skin as the outer protective layer has been removed. Skin needling by creating micro channels through the skin can also increase this absorption (transdermal absorption) through the skin but without the higher risks associated with removing the outer layer of skin altogether in microdermabrasion.

Derma Roller compared to Botulinum toxin

No direct studies have been done comparing the two treatments. In comparison botulinum toxin will achieve quicker results as it paralyses the nerves in the area. These results will last between 4 and 6 months. In comparison as the derma roller works by naturally increasing your own natural collagen it will achieve more natural looking results which will last much longer, usually between 5-7 years.

Derma Roller compared to Dermal Fillers

No studies have been done comparing the 2 treatments. Dermal fillers achieve rapid results that can last for up to 6 months. In comparison the derma rollers produce more natural results that last between 5 and 7 years.
